Hello Judges!

On behalf of the USA – EAST Region, I’m pleased to announce that we are doing a Mock Tournament in the greater Philadelphia area!  This will be an IN-Person type of Judge Conference.

We will be simulating a Competitive REL tournament with the help of multiple participants acting as players, floor judges, Team Leads, and a HJ. Over the course of the day, we will go through each facet of a Comp REL event. This style of judge conference serves as a training ground to learn various roles and to get lots of practice taking calls.

Judge participants will be rotating through roles as the various teams. They will learn how to prepare for a Comp REL tournament, how to make announcements, how to handle deck checks with actual decks to check, how to handle the floor, and lots of feedback on investigations and rulings.  Judges participating as players will be assigned that role exclusively.

We will need judges to act as players, judges to act as the HJ/Appeals Judge, and judges to act as floor judges.

The format will be Competitive Booster Draft!!!!  If you are a player, you will be provided with 3 “booster packs” for which to use in the “Called Draft”.  After which you will construct a draft deck  and register your pool and decklist that you will use in 2 rounds of competitive limited.

The event will be capped at 35 people.

Those attending in a Judge Role are expected to dress in judge attire (ex: Judge shirt, Regional Judge Shirt, or a polo/button down shirt are recommended), black pants/skirt/kilt, and comfortable shoes/sneakers. You’ll be on your feet and taking calls for the better part of 3-4 hours. Those attending as players should dress for the role.

As a sign of appreciation, Judge Academy allows us to offer attendees a selection of promotional foil cards. The exact packet is not known at this time, but will include four promotional cards. These foils are available if you meet the following criteria:

-Register for the conference by applying to this event before the deadline
-Be a certified (Level 1 or higher) Judge with a correct level in  Judge Academy at the time you apply, or if you certify after applying, email me at em610161@gmail.com with your updated level and link to your Judge Academy profile.

Schedule:

Judges – 10:15 am call time

Players  – 10:45 am call time

We expect to start the mock tournament at 11:15 and be done with the event by 4:00pm.

Application Letters are required!

Judge Applicants:

This is a great way to get Comp REL experience if you are a newer judge.  It is also encouraged for  you to participate in this event if you are a newer judge.  These events are designed FOR YOU!  Take advantage of the opportunity.

Head Judge/Appeals Judge

Have you “called” a draft before at the competitive level?  Well, now is your chance.  Whether you are a seasoned judge or not, many have not called a draft and this would allow you to get that experience.  Both the Head Judge and the Appeals judge will be required to call drafts for this event.

In your cover letter, please explain why you want to be a judge in this event.  Please note in the letter the position you are most interested in applying for – Floor Judge, Appeals Judge, and/or Head Judge (you can request to be considered for more than one role).  Appeals Judge and Head Judge are a great experience and test of mettle for any L1 looking to become L2.

Player Applicants:

We are looking for 16 – 24  judges to act as players.  In the player role, each player will be given a scripted “mistake” to perform during each round (There will also be special ones for this event).  After the judge call is finalized you will be expected to mentor the judge on the call by providing feedback.  Judges participating in this role are required to have experience in judging comp REL events.  If you have not judged many comp REL events it is encouraged that you instead apply for this event in the “judge” role.
