Roles and Compensation

A three-day badge is included for all accepted applicants regardless of number of days on staff.

Administrator – $350/day

Manage specific areas of an event with extra trust and responsibility.  There are a very limited number of administrator roles available.

10k Open Head Guru – $350/day (applies to all days on staff)

The Head Judge of the Saturday and Sunday $10ks. Gurus selected for this position will be expected to act in Administrator roles on days they are not Head Judging.

Guru / Judge – $250/day

Floor judges, registration staff, prize wall staff.

Standby – $250/day, if activated

We need some extra staff to be available if needed. If you are willing to come to the show and play, but judge last minute if needed, please apply for standby.

In Atlanta, we had new guru attire, as seen by our wonderful staff below. These jackets will be returning for San Diego. Staff will be provided jackets to wear on shift and be returned at the end of the event.
There will be a judge conference Thursday evening prior to the festival (April 6).

This application closes January 30th.

Staff selections are expected no later than February 7th.

Why “guru”?  Guru is a term of respect for a teacher who guides members of a community.  The term judge has an overtone of authority and enforcement.  This can lead to an adversarial relationship dynamic among players and judges.  Thus, I went looking for a term that could convey a more holistic approach to helping fans have a great time at events.  I very open to suggestions if someone has a better term that demonstrates a nurturing connection to community rather than an enforcement paradigm.

To everyone, thank you for taking the time to apply.  We appreciate you and your efforts.  Events like this run out of staff positions before we run out of qualified candidates, and we look forward to working with all of you in San Diego or at a different show in the future.

Accurate information is the responsibility of the tournament organizer for each of their respective events. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the organizer directly.
