Greetings and Salutations
Hello there! It’s my great pleasure to announce the first regional conference in the Midwest for 2020 and in years! The last time was nearly 4 years ago, also in Kansas City. I was the lead for conference education (sessions, not locations/logistics) for USA-Central and Judge education is something that I’m passionate about. I began working on this last fall, to bring you all not only a day to remember but an experience that many of you haven’t had available under the mini-conference system from our former region.
We have a great set of speakers lined up including special guests Rob McKenzie and Eric Levine (well, maybe he should be called a special friend at this point). But wait, there’s more! What about you? Please check out the Call for Speakers section.
Call for Presenters
While planning for this event we knew certain things we wanted to convey that just don’t come across well in the digital realm. We also recognize that we don’t have all the answers and there are many voices across our region that should be heard. We reserved two full session slots in the day, as well as Lightning Talk opportunities and moderated tables for you! Please fill out this form and send in your rough outline (not needed for a Birds of a Feather table). We will contact you to set up a dry run of your presentation and offer feedback. Final speakers will be selected Feb 28th, so don’t delay as there is much to do to ensure a quality presentation!

How to Teach the Hard – Rob McKenzie
Have you ever had problems with teaching people layers, the steps to casting a spell, or the parts of the turn? Rob goes over his method for teaching tough rules subjects and how to make them stick.
Deck Checks – Brandon Darby
New or uncertain about how to perform a deck check? You will cover the Who/What/Where/When/Why of doing a check as well as the philosophy behind it. This will culminate in a practical experience to tie it all together.
Judging Tips and Considerations – Jordan Powell
Jordan will walk you through a variety of things to help improve your game when you have an event. From pre-event activities to post, there are a lot of little things that can be done to make the most of the day and put your best foot forward.
Advanced Deck Checks – Brandon Darby
Have you had to consider what it means to be responsible for the Deck Checks team? This session goes into the leadership decisions for team leads and head judges. It also explores difficult situations with participants in a practical environment.
Card Counting – Eric Levine
“Judge, I think my opponent drew an extra card.” Rulings of this type can be daunting! Join Eric as he demystifies card counting and turns it into not just something you can do, but something you can teach!
Lightning Talks – Cancelled
Breaking Barriers – Graydon Beadle
How to better say what you mean and mean what you say.
Birds of a Feather
This is an unstructured wide discussion where people are encouraged to find tables on a particular topic, and move from table to table to meet their needs. Topic requests will be open in the morning for your to express your wants. Eric Levine will be hosting a table for meet and greet and all your other Eric needs. Want to lead a table? Let us know!
Gather and share your takeaways from your day, what really resonated with you.
Meet With Eric
Over the course of the day, you are strongly encouraged to meet your Community Consultant Eric Levine. He really likes meeting new people! To make it even more exciting for you than just meeting a great human and judge, Magelings Games is giving him a bag of goodies to hand out to each new person he meets over the course of the weekend. You must attend the conference for this added bonus, it’s when we give him the bag… can’t trust him with bags of goodies for too long.
We have a “meet Eric Levine” bonus going on the day of the conference, but we also have a few more things. If you are registered for the conference and play in the Star City Games Regional Championship the day before you’ll get a bonus at that event as well. And I’m pretty sure somewhere we said door prizes. Get rewarded for participation!
Support and Stuff
Support for this conference will be one foil packet and one playmat. Did someone say random door prizes?
We strongly encourage you to take notes during the day. Our closing session is a share out and notes will help you with that. If you do not have a notebook, we will do our best to hook you up in the morning (see Nat).
