Midwest Regional Judge Conference (September)

This is an exact duplicate of the August Midwest conference.

Note: The schedule portion does not display well when viewed in mobile mode.

The conference is a Judge Academy, foil-supported, two-track event ran on Zoom and Discord capped at 125 attendees. What this means, is there will be four sets of two simultaneous presentations. One track focusing on soft skills, the other on hard skills. You will choose which presentation you wish to attend during each time slot. Followed by a single presentation that everyone will attend.

Priority will be given to applicants from the Midwest region for 50% of the slots. If you are from another region, feel free to apply. We will likely have spots for you. The Southeast Asian region will be guest attendees, if you are from that region please apply we have spots for you.

Receiving Foils

In order to receive foils, you must attend all four presentation times and be a certified judge L1 and above. Exceptions to the attendance requirement can be given by a staff member. If you cannot attend the entire conference please let us know. Attendance will be tracked via Google feedback forms as well as presence in the Zoom call.

There will be an additional shipping charge for foils shipped internationally with tracking. We will have an option to sell your foils if you do not wish to have them shipped.

*Note* Due to a recent reminder on shipping policy by JA, we have determined we cannot support international attendees. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Presentations

Track 1
Three Judges Walk into the Jar – Paul Baranay
Judges rely on three major policy documents: the JAR, the IPG, and the MTR. How are they similar — and how are they different? Learn more about the philosophy behind these documents and how to avoid common mistakes!
Unsporting Conduct and Overview – Ian Mervin Go
We will follow the story of Aang, the last airbender, as he participates in Magic Fest Wakanda and battle through nine rounds of Day 1. Through out the rounds he will encounter different characters, mainly from the Marvel Universe, and also different UC penalty violations. Will Aang make it to Day 2?
Introduction to the Cheating DQ – Elaine Cao
Track 2
Fostering a Casual Commander Community – Luke Arledge
Learn how to balance the “competitive” desire to win with the “casual” environment some players expect from a Commander playgroup. No matter what role you fill in your group, you can make a difference. Useful for both home playgroups and lgs events.
Road to Level 3 – QJ Wong
This seminar will explain why it is beneficial for your own personal and professional (or educational) development to work towards L3 even if you have no intention to level up in Judge Academy and how to make the best out of it.
How to Use Your Voice Powerfully, and Safely -Ben Valenzia
In this presentation, we will cover correct vocal technique so you can speak for extended periods and project your voice to a crowd. We will also cover how to tell if you are hurting your voice and how to correct bad vocal habits.
Everyone
Thanks for the Feedback -Meg Baum
