HOW TO APPLY

To Apply, we ask that all applicants complete this Application Form. Please complete all questions to the best of your ability. Note that all positions available through this Leadership application are eligible for, but not guaranteed, hotel sponsorship.

The application window for this event will close at 11:59 PM Pacific time on Monday, August 22nd, 2022.

 

EVENT INFORMATION and AVAILABLE POSITIONS

This application covers leadership roles for the following events:

 

SCG CON Philadelphia will take place on November 11-13, 2022 at Valley Forge Casino Resort

  • Magic Side Events Lead – $1,000
  • Flesh and Blood Lead – $1,000
  • Magic Brothers War Prerelease Lead – $1,000
  • Magic Trials Lead – $900
  • Magic Pioneer $20K Head Judge – $1,200
  • Magic Pioneer $20K Support Judge – $1,000
  • Magic Modern $5K Head Judge – $900
  • Magic Pioneer $5K Head Judge – $900

 

AVAILABLE SHIFTS AND COMPENSATION:

Head Judge:

Judges selected to Head Judge an event are expected to plan for their event including selecting teams and leads, pre-event briefings, and being a pre-event resource for staff. At the event, the Head Judge is responsible for the their event including taking appeals. When not assigned to their event, Head Judges will assist with tasks similar to Keystone judges.

Head Judges of a Multi-Day event will receive $1,200 for the weekend. To apply to Head Judge a Multi-Day event, you should be confident in your ability to run an 800 Player event with twenty floor judges at Competitive REL.

Head Judges of a $5K event will receive $900 for the weekend. To apply to Head Judge a $5K event, you should be confident in your ability to run a 300 Player event with ten floor judges at Competitive REL.

 

Support Judge:

Judges selected to Support Judge are expected to assist with planning for their event and be ready to take over for the Head Judge in the case that they have to withdraw. They should remain up to date on all briefings and be a pre-event resource for staff. At the event, the Support Judge assists with their event including taking appeals. When not assigned to their event, Support Judges will assist with tasks similar to Keystone judges.

Support Judges for a Multi-Day events will receive $1,000 for the weekend. To apply to Support Judge a Multi-Day event, you should be confident in your ability to assist with an 800 Player event with twenty floor judges at Competitive REL.

 

Magic Side Events Lead:

Judges selected as Magic Side Events Lead are expected to plan for their events including pre-event briefings and being a pre-event resource for staff. At the event, the Magic Side Events Lead is responsible for all Magic tournaments that do not have a contracted Head Judge, as well as taking appeals and conducting investigations for Magic side events.

Magic Side Events Leads will receive $1,000 for the weekend. To apply to be Magic Side Events Lead, you should be confident in your ability to manage several (5-6) concurrent Regular REL tournaments and to oversee a large (7-10) team of judges.

 

Flesh and Blood Lead:

Judges selected as Flesh and Blood Lead are expected to plan for their events including pre-event briefings and being a pre-event resource for staff. At the event, the Flesh and Blood Lead is responsible for all Flesh and Blood tournaments that do not have a contracted Head Judge, as well as taking appeals and conducting investigations for Flesh and Blood events.

The Flesh and Blood Lead will receive $1,000 for the weekend. To apply to be Flesh and Blood Lead, you should be confident in your ability to manage a few (2-3) Casual REL tournaments at a time and oversee a large (5-8) team of judges.

 

Trials Lead:

Judges selected as Trials Lead are expected to plan for the Friday Trials tournaments including pre-event briefings and being a pre-event resource for staff. At the event, the Trials Lead is responsible for the their tournaments including taking appeals. On Saturday and Sunday, the Trials Lead will assist with tasks similar to Keystone judges.

Trails Leads will receive $900 for the weekend. To apply to be a Trails Lead, you should be confident in your ability to run two (2) concurrent 100 Player tournaments with a large (6-8) team of judges at Competitive REL.

 

Keystone:

Judges selected for Keystone will arrive when the doors open, receive a 1-hour lunch break, and are expected to stay through the end of all events. Keystone judges are experienced and will often be used in Judge Leadership positions throughout the weekend.

Approximate shift times:

  • Friday – 11:30 am – approximately 9:30 pm
  • Saturday – 8:00 am – approximately 8:00 pm
  • Sunday – 8:00 am – approximately 7:00 pm

Judges will receive $275 for each Keystone Shift. To apply to be a Keystone Judge at an SCG CON event, you should be confident in your ability to be a leader on the floor and to support both Regular and Competitive REL events.

 

Stage Staff:

Staff selected for Stage Staff will arrive before the doors open, receive a 1-hour lunch break, and are expected to stay through the end of all registration. Stage Admins engage with players signing up for events and are experienced with registration and scorekeeping.

Approximate shift times:

  • Friday – 11:30 am – approximately 8:00 pm
  • Saturday – 8:00 am – approximately 8:00 pm
  • Sunday – 8:00 am – approximately 6:00 pm

Staff will receive $275 for each Stage Admin Shift. To apply to be a Stage Admin you should be experienced taking registration and/or scorekeeping at large events with multiple tournaments.

Judges may apply for any mix of roles over the weekend, simply mark the shifts that you are applying for in the Application Form. If you anticipate being unable to arrive on time or are requesting special accommodation for the beginning or end of your shifts, please contact us at judge@starcitygames.com.

All Leadership roles expect judges to be on staff for all three days.

 

EXPECTATIONS

Judges at Star City Games events are expected to positively contribute to the atmosphere of the event. They should behave in a professional manner at all times and constructively engage with players and other staff to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all attendees. Judges are expected to arrive on time and in appropriate attire to begin judging at the start of their assigned shifts.

Magic focused Judges at Star City Games events are expected to prepare for each event by reviewing the Magic Tournament Rules, Comprehensive Rules, Infraction Procedure Guide, and Judging at Regular REL documents. These documents can be found at the Magic Judges Document Center.

Flesh and Blood focused Judges at Star City Games events are expected to prepare for each event by reviewing the Tournament Rules and Policy, Comprehensive Rules, and Penalty Guidelines. These documents can be found at the Flesh and Blood Rules and Policy Center.

Judges at SCG CON events will be provided a blue judge shirt, which is expected to be returned at the conclusion of the event. The Judge should arrive with black professional attire and black, comfortable shoes. During breaks, or any other time that a judge is off duty, judges should remove or cover their judge shirt to indicate that they are not on shift.

 

CONTRACT AND TAX INFORMATION

Judges are independent contractors and will be required to sign an event contract for their work at SCG CON events. Compensation for judges that are residents of the United States will be provided in the form of a check at the conclusion of your final shift of the weekend or mailed to your address following the event. International judges may elect to receive their compensation in the form of a PayPal payment after the event instead. All Judges are required to submit a valid US tax form (W-9 or W-8 BEN) to Star City Games, in order to receive compensation.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

As per the Wizards Play Network (WPN) policy posted in the Magic Rules and Documents, Star City Games is required to perform background checks on all public facing staff, including judges, contracted to work at our events. All judges may be asked to provide necessary information and consent required for Star City Games to engage a third-party organization to conduct a background check. Please note that these forms must be completed and returned by their respective deadline(s) if you wish to be considered for a contracted judge position at a Star City Games event.

Judges wishing to apply for this event after the application window has closed should email judge@starcitygames.com. Please note that late applications will be considered at a lower priority than those received during the official application window.

 

Applications for these SCG CON events will close at 11:59 PM (Pacific) on Monday, August 22nd, 2022.

 

Leadership Role offers for these SCG CON events will be sent on or before Friday, August 26th, 2022.
